Väreet
Väreet is a multi-channel sound installation where I use handmade paper to transmit and produce sound. A transducer is attached to the surface of each paper. The papers hang from the ceiling with audio cables that are connected to amplifiers and media players. With feeding sounds of wind to the papers through the transducers, the papers start to tremble from the vibrations in a very visible way and produce rustling sounds of their own.

Paper has made it possible for us to extend the limits of memory and communication through symbolic representations and visual imagery. It is seen as a vessel of knowledge and communication, while its intrinsic properties are being disregarded. In the process of papermaking, the fibers have been ripped and pressed to a form almost two dimensional, but the end product still contains some things that reminds us of its origins. It is somehow in a liminal state between life and eternal.
In the work, Handmade papers are resonating as the sounds of wind travel through them, creating a symbiotic sonic texture off the embedded sounds together with those of the paper itself. These vibrant embodiments of sound, together with their surroundings, form a new reterritorialized aural environment.
